President of the European Parliament in Quarantine
President David Sassoli of the European Parliament remains inside for the time being. He went into quarantine after an employee he had recently been in contact with turned out to be infected with the coronavirus.
Sassoli has no complaints that are reminiscent of the virus; he tweets. But the Italian adheres to Belgian rules, which prescribe that he must be tested and be quarantined.
The European Parliament was actually supposed to move from Brussels to Strasbourg this week to meet there for a week. But Sassoli found the relocation operation too dangerous because the virus is spreading all over Europe again.
Brussels has been struggling for weeks with an ever-swelling new wave of infections. Recently, a handful of EU commissioners, EU president Charles Michel and the entire Walloon and Brussels sub-government were already forced to go into quarantine.
