Russia Does Not Want Switzerland to Represent Ukraine
Moscow does not want Switzerland to represent Ukrainian interests in Russia. According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland is no longer a neutral country and therefore cannot represent Russian interests in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Moscow points out that the Swiss are participating in the “anti-Russian sanctions” that followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
With the rejection, Moscow is responding to an agreement between Bern and Kyiv that will allow Switzerland to take over the diplomatic duties of the Ukrainian government in the Russian capital after the rift between neighbouring countries.
Switzerland has been a recognized neutral intermediary in diplomacy, for example, a representative of US interests in Iran since 1980. Swiss media had already reported that the deal depended only on Russian consent.
